Robin Blakney-Carlson

Welcome to my site! My name is Robin Blakney-Carlson and I am a feltmaker, instructor and fiber artist. I've been fascinated with exploring the textile arts since I was a girl. I was a serious handspinner for twenty years before I was introduced to the real art of feltmaking by my sister Polly Stirling around 1994. Polly and her assistant Sachiko Kotaka developed the technique they coined "nuno felt", an innovative method for creating felt with lightweight, drapable characteristics. Polly has been an incredibly creative and generous feltmaker and teacher. I have worked extensively with her as my mentor, learning new skills and discovering the unlimited potential of felt as a medium.

WORKSHOPS

I opened my studio, Luckystone Feltworks, in 2006 to provide a proper venue for my feltmaking and teaching; a place where students and fiber artists have the space to learn and create. I offer feltmaking instruction on a wide range of felting topics for all ages and abilities, as well as hosting workshops with guest instructors. Please visit the CLASSES page for information on my current workshops and special events.

FELTWORK

My passion is combining felt and stitching to create one-of-a-kind garments, accessories and home décor. My work is for sale in The Gallery at Luckystone Feltworks. I am happy to consider commissions. Please visit the GALLERY page to view examples of my work.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF FELTMAKING

Anthropologists have discovered artifacts made of felt in every geographical location where sheep and people existed, dating back as early as 500 BC. A long cultural tradition of feltmaking continues in many parts of the world. Internationally we are seeing innovative work by contemporary feltmakers emerging; a reinvention of felt as a fine art.
